Lady Pirates Drop Conference Opener To Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Junior LaCoya Terry produced 20 points for the East Carolina women's basketball team but it was not enough as the Lady Pirates opened conference play with an 81-55 loss to Marshall on Saturday evening inside the Cam Henderson Center. East Carolina falls to 6-8 overall and 0-1 in conference play while the Herd improves to 9-5 and 1-0 in C-USA. Freshman Allison Spivey also scored in double figures, netting 10 on the night.
Marshall jumped out to a 6-0 lead but a jumper by Terry pulled the Lady Pirates to within 6-4 with 17:00 left in the half. A 25-7 run, capped off by a Tynikki Crook layup, gave the Herd a 31-11 lead and complete control of the contest. Marshall extended its lead to 25 with a Kizzy Hart three-pointer as the Herd took a 44-21 lead into the half.
Two quick three pointers by Spivey brought ECU to within 19, 46-27, to begin the second half but Chantelle Handy responded with a jumper to stretch the Marshall lead back to 50-27. An 11-5 run by the Herd then put the game completely out of reach as the Lady Pirates found themselves down 61-32. Marshall cruised the rest of the way as East Carolina could pull no closer than 23.
To go along with her 10 points, Spivey also pulled down eight boards, narrowly missing a double-double. A quartet of Herd players scored in double-figures, led by Crook and Hart who scored 15 each. Crook also hauled in eight rebounds while Meagan Samis chipped in seven. The Lady Pirates shot just 33 percent for the game while Marshall turned in a mark of 46.8. Turnovers also plagued ECU as they committed 21 as compared to 13 for the Herd.
The Lady Pirates stay on the road next weekend, traveling to UAB and Memphis to continue conference play. ECU will face the Blazers at 8 p.m. on Thursday inside Bartow Arena.
