HUNTINGTON, W.Va. --- The East Carolina men and women's swimming and diving teams opened their respective seasons with quad and tri-meets on Saturday with very strong performances. The women's team posted head-to-head wins over Marshall (224-76), West Virginia (171-119) and Xavier (184-72), while the men's team defeated Xavier (184-72) and fell to West Virginia (137-151). Marshall doesn't sponsor a men's team.
"This is one of the fastest opening meets I've ever been a part of during my tenure here," said Pirate head coach Rick Kobe. "We posted some extremely fast times today and are very pleased to have beaten teams from three different conferences."
The women's team recorded five first place finishes led by senior Amanda Duncan, who helped Kelsey Brosi, Stephanie Harper and Jenna Stewart earn a first place finish in the 200 medley relay, while also touching first in the 100 and 200 fly. Harper won the 100 breaststroke, while Jackie Jones beat the field in the 200 IM.
Sophomore Thiago Cavalcanti and freshman Ailton Temotio each won a pair of individual events. Cavalcanti took first in the 500 and 1000 free, while Temotio proved to be the fastest swimmer at the meet winning both the 50 and 100 free. Both team with Jason Guzewich and Adam Papendick to win the 400 free relay. Junior Blake Briese won the 200 free.
The Pirates will host Davidson in their first home dual meet of the season on Friday, Oct. 17. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
