Men's Basketball Visits Boys And Girls Club

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina men's basketball team paid a visit to the Boys and Girls Club on Tuesday as a part of the team's community service outreach efforts.
"I think it's important for their whole college experience," said Pirate head coach Mack McCarthy. "They can really have an affect on people's lives and provide a little hope for many of those less fortunate than them."
The Boys and Girls Clubs of Pitt County serve more than 2,000 children and have programs designed to develop the youth of the community through education, positive learning, experience with others and wholesome, participative activities.
Senior guard Sam Hinnant, like many of his teammates, was emotionally touched by his experience on Tuesday.
"I love coming out here," said Hinnant. "I just remember the days I was in the Boys & Girls Club and say some Carolina Panther would come to the club. It's like heaven. You're seeing people that are on TV every day and they're where you want to be in life.
"We just wanted to come out here and let them know that, even if you're growing up in a bad neighborhood and whatnot, you can still make it out and be somebody."

The Pirates played games with the kids for approximately one-hour before signing autographs for the nearly 275 kids in attendance at the Jack Minges Unit on Firetower Road. The ECU players took part in games of basketball, foosball, football, ping pong and pool during their two-hour stay.
