COLUMBIA, S.C. --- The East Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams performed well on the opening day of competition at Gamecock Invitational being held at the University of South Carolina.
The women's team currently stands in fourth place among the six-team field, while the men's team is fifth overall. North Carolina is in first place on both the men's and women's side. Duke is currently second in the women's standings and third in the men's. South Carolina currently occupies second-place in the men's competition and third-place in the women's.
The women's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Jenna Stewart, Kelsey Brosi, Kali Gaskill and Amanda Duncan started the finals competition with a third-place finish (1:34.68). Stewart also competed in the 50-yard freestyle and earned a fourth-place finish (23.67)
During the men's finals, sophomore Thiago Cavalcanti earned a third-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (4:29.62).
The meet continues tomorrow morning with the preliminaries followed by Day Two of the finals Friday night beginning at 6 o'clock.
