Complete 2009 Brooks Wallace Pre-Season Watch List
LUBBOCK, Texas - East Carolina pitcher Seth Maness has been named to the 2009 Brooks Wallace Player-of-the-Year Award Pre-Season Watch List the College of Baseball Foundation announced Friday. The sophomore ace is the third Pirate to be named to the Watch List following Stephen Batts and T.J. Hose's nomination in 2008.
The Pinehurst, N.C. native, who was named Conference USA Freshman-of-the-Year in 2008, had one of the best freshman seasons in school history after posting a 9-2 record with a 3.27 ERA and 81 strikeouts with just 20 walks in 98.1 pitched. Maness became just the second freshmen in ECU history to win nine games (Mickey Britt, 1977).
Maness became one of the most decorated Pirates in school history after being named to five All-America teams, three of those coming as a freshman. He joined former Pirate greats Cory Scott (2000) and Greg Bunn (2004) as the only players in school history to be selected to five all-america teams in the same season.
"We look forward to another great year of college baseball. The College Baseball Foundation continues to expand in many areas and we are excited to acknowledge and award achievements and outstanding character on and off the diamond," said Raymond Richardson, chairman of Brooks Wallace National Player of the Year Award.
The Wallace Award is presented to the nation's top collegiate baseball player in conjunction with the College Baseball Hall of Fame's annual induction festivities. The 2009 award banquet will be held Thursday, July 2, in the United Spirit Arena on the campus of Texas Tech University.
The Wallace Award is a dedication to the memory of the former Texas Tech player and assistant coach Brooks Wallace. Wallace was a slick-fielding shortstop at Texas Tech from 1977 to 1980. A four-year starter, he was named All-Southwest Conference and All-District his senior year. He led the Red Raiders to their first-ever appearance in the Southwest Conference Tournament in 1980. After playing two years in the Texas Rangers organization, he returned to Texas Tech and served as a graduate assistant and later as an assistant coach. In the summer of 1984, he was diagnosed with cancer and fought the disease courageously until his death on March 24, 1985, at age 27. The Plano, TX, native was married to the former Sandy Arnold and they had one daughter, Lindsay Ryan.
Maness and the Pirates will begin spring practice on Friday, Feb. 1 in preparation for the season opener against Monmouth on Feb. 20, 2009.
