
UTEP Handles Lady Pirates, 81-53

EL PASO, Texas. - Natasha Lacy scored 20 points as the UTEP Miners pulled away from the East Carolina women's basketball team, handing the Pirates their second consecutive loss. UTEP improves to 19-2, 10-0 in Conference USA action, extending their winning streak to 15, while ECU falls to 10-13, 4-6 in league play.
East Carolina owned the lead for the first six minutes, taking the three point, 7-4 advantage on a Gabriela Husarova jumper at the 14:20 mark. UTEP took its first lead of the contest on a Kasia Krezel three-pointer, giving the Miners the 9-7 lead at the first media timeout. After the timeout, UTEP rolled off three more unanswered points to increase its lead to five, 12-7, with 11:12 remaining in the half. The Lady Pirates kept the Miners close over the next three minutes, as ECU kept it within three, with the score 18-15 at the under eight media. LaCoya Terry's three-pointer at the 3:35 mark put the Lady Pirates back on top, 23-22, but a jumper by Claudia Porras put the Miners back on top, 24-23, with 3:18 remaining before the half. Natasha Lacy rolled off four unanswered points to increase UTEP's lead to five, 28-23, with two minutes to play in the period. Allison Spivey connected on the first of a pair of free throws to make the halftime score 30-26 in favor of the Miners.
After UTEP went up 34-28 early in the second half, the Lady Pirates scored six unanswered points, with Husarova's basket tying the game at 34 a-piece with 14:01 on the clock. Jareica Huges' jumper put the Miners up two, 36-34, but Jasmine Young's three-pointer at the 13:19 mark gave ECU the one point, 37-36 lead. UTEP responded, scoring five straight to retake the lead, 41-37, with 11:43 remaining. UTEP's Timika Williams sparked a 16-2 run over the next six minutes, extending the Miner lead to 16, 55-39, with 6:54 to play, forcing ECU to call a timeout. Young hit a pair of three's over the next minute and a half, but the Miners continued their run, extending their lead to 21, 68-47, with 3:44 to play.
Jasmine Young led all Pirate scorers with 18 as LaCoya Terry chipped in with nine. Young was .500 from beyond the arc, going 4-for-8. Lacy led a trio of UTEP players in double figures as Kasia Kresel and Jareica Hughes scored 17 and 13, respectively.
ECU returns home for a four-game homestand, beginning on Friday, Feb. 15 as the Lady Pirates host Southern Miss in a 7:00 p.m. contest. UCF comes to Greenville on Sunday, Feb. 17 for the East Carolina Think Pink game. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game and anyone who does wear pink will be admitted for free.
