
Virginia Tech Turns Back Lady Pirates, 6-1

GREENVILLE, N.C. - No. 43 Virginia Tech used a doubles point and five singles wins to post a 6-1 non-conference victory over No. 63 East Carolina at the ECU Tennis Complex Thursday afternoon, snapping the Lady Pirates' season-opening 10-match win streak.
With the victory, the Hokies improved to 12-3 while ECU dropped to 10-1.
Virginia Tech took an early 1-0 advantage after winning two of three doubles bouts. Inga Beerman andYasmin Hamza rolled past Alex Smith and Brooke Walter by an 8-4 count at No. 1, while Holly Johnson and Jessica Long knocked off Hannah Priest and Varinia Soler by a similar score of 8-4 at No. 2. East Carolina used an 8-3 victory by Luiza Borges and Mireia Gol over Bethan James and J.J Larson to capture the No. 3 matchup.
Beerman started the Hokies off with a solo win at No. 1, cruising past Soler 6-2, 6-0, while Johnson defeated Tamara Sachs 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5.
At No. 3, Long clinched Virginia Tech's team victory when she downed Walter 7-6, 4-0 (default) before Hamza added a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 decision over Gol at No. 2 and Larson outlasted Borges 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 at the fourth position. Priest tallied ECU's only triumph of the afternoon by handling Natalie Kretzer 6-4, 6-2 in a No. 6 matchup.
East Carolina will return to action next week as it will enjoy a three-match stay in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Lady Pirates will open their spring break schedule by facing Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras Monday before battling nationally-ranked programs North Carolina (Wednesday) and UAB (Thursday) to close out the trip.
