
Lady Pirates Honored At Awards Banquet

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Junior guard LaCoya Terry was named Most Valuable Player at the 2008 East Carolina women's basketball awards banquet on Wednesday night in Harvey Hall located inside the Murphy Center. The award is the first honor for Terry, as classmate Jasmine Young has received the award the past two seasons.
A native of Hepzibah, Ga., Terry had an outstanding junior season, leading the team in field goal attempts (415), field goals made (171), 3-point field goal percentage (36.1), free throw percentage (72.6), free throws made (98), points (462), scoring average (15.4), and minutes played (1038). Terry averaged a team second-best 3.8 apg, 1.4 spg and started in 26 of the 30 Lady Pirate contests.
Terry racked up on honors this season, earning all-tournament team honors at the Hokie Hardwood Classic. She was also named Conference USA Player-of-the-week after recording a double-double to lead the Lady Pirates to its first-ever win over a top 25 team as they defeated N.C. State. Terry was also named to the 2008 C-USA Second-team all conference squad.
Head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener also passed out six other awards on the night. Senior Nicole Days (Burgaw, N.C.) received the Rebounding Award. Days started 29 of the 30 games for the Lady Pirates and led the team in rebounding (7.7 rpg) and blocked shots (23). Days was also honored with the Defensive Award for the second straight season. She led the squad in both offensive (93) and defensive (1437) rebounds. Days also finished her final season in purple and gold with the second highest field goal percentage on the team (44.4). She recorded her 500th career rebound this season as well.
Freshman Allison Spivey (Asheboro, N.C.) was presented with the Coaches Award. Spivey played in 28 games this season, getting the starting nod in 17 contests, including all 16 league games. She finished the season ranked third in the team in scoring (7.4), second in three-pointers made (36), second in three-point attempts (113), third in rebounds (130), third in assists (45), and fourth in steals (34). In just her first season, Spivey is 13 three-pointers away from reaching the top ten in career three-pointers made at ECU.
Junior Gabriela Husarova received the Most Improved Award. The Poprad, Slovakia native played in 27 contests, starting in 18. Husarova averaged 7.0 points and 3.9 rebounds in her third season, nearly doubling her scoring average from last season. She ended the season ranked in the top four in 14 categories for the Lady Pirates. Husarova was second in free throw percentage (72.2), and was third in three-point field goal attempts (70), three-pointers made (23), three-point percentage (32.9), and offensive rebounds (36). She was fourth in field goal attempts (180), field goals made (77), scoring average (7.0), and assists (36). Husarova finished fifth in total points (190), total rebounds (104), defensive boards (68), and in minutes (587). Husarova lifted the Lady Pirates to their win over Big East opponent Georgetown with her three-pointer in the final seconds. She also received the Scholar Athlete Award for having the highest GPA on the team.
Jasmine Young was presented with the Deflection Award for the second straight season. Young started in all 30 contests this season for the Lady Pirates, averaging 14.1 points and 6.2 assists per game. She continued to write her name in the ECU record books, moving up to fourth in three-point field goals made (151), and is just 15 shy of tying for first. She also moved up to second in career assists (501), and fourth in steals (215). She earned several honors this season, being named to the Lady Pirate Invitational and the Hokie Hardwood Classic all-tournament teams. In addition, she was named second-team all-CUSA for the third year in a row, as well as being named to the all-defensive team for the second season.
For their service and dedication to the Lady Pirates, managers Kevin Carnago and David Stahl were presented with the Sixth Man award.
In addition to the individual player recognitions, Baldwin-Tener presented 1,000 career point basketballs to LaCoya Terry and Jasmine Young.
