GREENVILLE, N.C. --- East Carolina University basketball coach Mack McCarthy announced that Darrius Morrow has signed a scholarship to attend ECU and play basketball beginning in the fall. Morrow originally signed with South Carolina, but was granted his release following a coaching change.
"Darrius will be a great addition to Pirate basketball," said McCarthy. "He will impact our program in many areas. Not only is he an outstanding player, he also comes from a winning tradition and brings an infectious enthusiasm with his personality.
"Playing for an outstanding coach like Phil McCrary will also contribute to his being prepared for success early on in his career here at ECU."
Morrow, listed at 6-foot-8 and 250 pounds, is currently a senior at Columbia High School in Decatur, Ga. He was named second team All-Georgia Class AAAA by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and was a McDonald's All-America nominee. Morrow averaged 14.5 points and 11.2 rebounds per game for the Eagles, who won the 2008 4A state title, their second in three years. Morrow was named MVP of the 2008 championship game.
"East Carolina is an up and coming program and I believe I can come in and help turn things around," said Morrow. "I think it's a place where my game can really blossom."
He is the 30th-best power forward prospect in the nation, according to ESPN.com.
"East Carolina is getting a solid player who I expect will do big things in Conference USA under the tutelage of Coach McCarthy," said McCrary. "Darrius is a smart player who plays within himself."
Morrow is the second player to sign with East Carolina for the 2008-09 season. Raheem Smith, younger brother of former ECU wide receiver Troy Smith, inked his National Letter-of-Intent during the 2008 fall signing period. Smith averaged 16.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 59 percent from the floor and 37 percent from behind the arc this past season at Louisburg College.
