CHARLESTON, S.C. - Junior Brooke Walter reached the final of the A2 Flight to lead the East Carolina women's tennis team at the College of Charleston Invitational this past weekend at the College of Charleston Tennis Center. The Lady Pirates produced 18 singles wins and three doubles triumphs in their second fall competition.
Walters began play by defeating Nikita Van Lierop of North Florida in straight sets (6-1, 6-3) then moved on to top Andrea Schutte of Charleston Southern (6-4, 2-6, 7-5). In the semifinal, she pushed past Charlotte's Andrea Rivera (6-2, 6-2) before falling to Kinsey Casey of the host team in a hard-fought match (3-6, 6-3, 6-4).
Also in the A2 Flight, Collins defeated Koren Fleming of Charlotte 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-1 and Brooke Pletcher of Charleston Southern 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 to qualify for the semifinals of the but then fell to College of Charleston's Casey in straight sets (6-2, 6-1). She did, however, rebound to top the 49ers' Andrea Rivera (3-6, 7-6 [5], [4]) to take third place. Senior Varinia Soler also competed in the flight and took seventh-place, winning two matches against Tina Petkova of Coastal Carolina (6-2, 6-2) and Andrea Schutte of the hosts (6-1, 7-6).
In Flight B1 singles play, sophomore Tamara Sachs lost her first match to Maria Camberos from the Chanticleers, 6-4 and 6-1, but bounced back to win the consolation bracket title with three straight-set victories over Charleston Southern's Leonie Mandlkow (6-2, 6-1), the Buccaneers' Amanda Swindall (6-2, 6-4) and Coastal Carolina's Caitlyn Brooksbank (6-4, 6-4).
In addition to Collins and Sachs, sophomore Kristin Gordon posted a 2-1 match record, picking up wins over Barry's Julie Cadet (6-2, 6-1) and Sarah Schwartz of the host team (7-5, 7-6 [11]) to take fifth place in the B2 Flight.
Highlighting doubles action for East Carolina was the tandem of Brooke Walter and Jessica Cook, who took sixth-place in the A1 Flight by defeating Coastal Carolina's Lexi Bolesky and Brooksbank, 9-8.
The Lady Pirates continue their fall schedule Oct. 3-4 at the Wofford Invitational in Spartanburg, S.C.
