GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina women's swimming and diving team improved to 8-1 in dual meet competition this season with a 191-103 win over UMBC at Minges Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon, while the men's team earned a 149-149 tie against the Retrievers and are 6-1-1 overall.
The meet was highlighted by senior Amanda Duncan, who broke the 27-year old pool record in the 100-yard butterfly by 0.02 with a time of 55.97. She also touched first in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 2:04.29.
Freshman Kelsy Brosi, sophomore Jenna Stewart and junior Rachel Blue also recorded multiple first-place finishes. Brosi won both the 100-yard backstroke (59.31) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:06.21), while Blue captured first-place in both the 200 (1:52.20) and 500-yard freestyle (5:00.81). Stewart swept the sprint freestyle events with wins in the 50 (23.66) and 100-yard (51.52) races.
Freshman Meghan Coyne swept the diving events by scoring 258.30 points on the one-meter board and 254.63 points on the three-meter board.
The ladies won the first 14 events to secure the 151 points necessary to win.
Sophomore Thiago Cavalcanti was one of four members of the Pirates' men's team to earn a first-place finish. Cavalcanti touched first in the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 9:37.14.
Sophomore Roman Sandler placed first in the 100-yard backstroke (51.86) as did Junior Temotio In the 50-yard freestyle (21.00) and Tommy Ryan in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:06.67).
The Pirates return to dual meet competition Wednesday, Jan. 21, at N.C. State.
