ECU Announces 2009 Walk For Women

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Join the East Carolina women's basketball team in a 1.5- mile walk to support breast cancer awareness. The Walk for Women, part of ECU's "Pink Zone" initiative, will take place on Saturday, February 14th. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. in the lobby of the Murphy Center and breakfast will be provided.
The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) began the WBCA Pink ZoneTM, formerly known as "Think Pink," in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities. In 2007, more than 120 schools contributed to make the inaugural year a success. Last year, over 1,200 teams and organizations participated, reaching more than 830,000 fans and raising approximately $930,000 for breast cancer awareness and research.
Proceeds will be donated to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, in memory of ECU Alumna and late N.C. State Head Women's Basketball Coach Kay Yow, as well as the Gardeners for Hope: Joan Balch Cancer Fund, which is administered by the Leo W. Jenkins Cancer Center in Greenville, NC to assist breast cancer patients who are challenged financially or in special need of encouragement.
The Lady Pirates' contest against UCF at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 15th will also serve as part of "Pink Zone" week. Anyone who wears pink to the game will receive free admission. A check presentation is scheduled for halftime of the contest to recognize the proceeds raised from the Walk for Women.
