
Swimming and Diving Teams Sweep UNCW

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The East Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams picked up victories over UNC Wilmington on Saturday inside the Minges Aquatic Center. The women defeated the Seahawks 202-98 and are now 9-1 in dual meet action. The men took down UNCW by a much slimmer margin, winning152.5-145.5, and moved to 7-1-1 on the season.
For the second time in as many home meets, senior Amanda Duncan broke the pool record in the 100-yard butterfly. After just setting the record at 55.97 in the meet against UMBC, Duncan again lowered the mark, this time touching in with a time of 55.54. On the day, Duncan also finished first in the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.45) and joined Kelsey Brosi, Stephanie Harper and Jenna Stewart on the winning 200-yard medley relay squad (1:46.97).
Individually, Brosi took home first place in the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.12) while Harper touched first in both the 100-yard (1:05.11) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.96). Stewart swept the sprint events for the Pirates, taking first in the 50-yard freestyle (23.89) and the 100-yard freestyle (52.24).
Other first place finishes for the ECU women were recorded by Rachel Blue in the 200-yard (1:53.04) and 500-yard freestyle (5:01.64), Jackie Jones in the 200-yard individual medley (2:08.17) and Katie Yamamoto, who swept the one-meter (259.79) and three-meter (278.85) diving events. Finally, the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Brosi, Stewart, Blue and Kali Gaskill took first.
On the men's side, Thiago Cavalcanti and Tommy Ryan led the team, as both recorded multiple first-place finishes. Cavalcanti won the 500-yard (4:40.57) and 1,000-yard freestyle (9:36.54) with Ryan taking the 100-yard (57.58) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:06.63).
Blake Briese touched first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.49), as did Junior Temotio in the 100-yard freestyle (46.98) and Andrew Stoker in the 200-yard butterfly (1:54.71). Rounding out the men's side winners was the 200-yard medley relay team of Roman Sandler, Ryan, Stoker and Jason Guzewich, which finished in 1:34.23.
The Pirates have the week off before returning to the pool next Saturday, Feb. 7, at William & Mary.
