ECU Sweeps Dual Meet At Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The East Carolina men's and women's swimming & diving teams swept a dual meet at Gardner-Webb Friday night, with the men's team winning, 108-97, and the Pirate ladies taking a 117-88 decision. Junior Thiago Cavalcanti won the 500 and 1000-yard freestyle to lead the men, while senior Rachel Blue and junior Jenna Stewart each won two events in the women's meet.
The ECU men touched the wall first in five events. Cavalcanti clocked a 9:44.41 in the 1000 free to give the Pirates their first individual win of the meet. Cavalcanti later added a winning time of 4:49.12 in the 500. Juniors Andrew Christian and Andrew Stoker posted wins in the 200 and the 50-yard freestyle, respectively, with freshman Chris Borysewicz recording a second place finish in the 1000 and 100-yard freestyle.
The Pirates recorded four additional second-place finishes to Borysewicz. Senior Jason Guzewich finished 0.05 behind Stoker in the 50 free. Sophomore Jonathan Bailey touched second in the 500 free, as did sophomore Travis Stauder in 100-yard breaststroke and sophomore Miles Maximini in the 100-yard backstroke.
"This was a very tough meet for our guys tonight," head coach Rick Kobe said. " I am very proud with the way they responded and performed. Everyone was positive and we achieved what we came here to do tonight."
In the women's portion of the evening, Blue placed first in the 200 free (1:55.20) and the 500 free (5:09.03) and Stewart added wins in the 50 (24.22) and the 100 free (52.93). The ECU women were dominant in their meet, winning six of 11 events and recording 16 top three finishes. Freshman Kayla Ford registered a time of 59.70 en route to taking first-place in the 100-yard backstroke, her first career victory, and junior Lauren Dufault took first in the 200 IM (2:10.31) The foursome of Kelsey Brosi, Katlin Potts, Holly Berenotto and Kali Gaskill won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:38.01
ECU's weekend in the southwestern corner of the state continues with a dual meet at Davidson on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Pirates have swept the Wildcats in 18 consecutive dual meets dating back to the 1991-92 season.
