Pirates Continue At Gamecock Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. – With only one day remaining of the Gamecock Invitational at the University of South Carolina’s Sol Blatt P.E. Center and Carolina Natatorium, the East Carolina University men’s swimming and diving team stayed in fifth place of seven squads while the Pirate women remained third of nine.
Today’s action began with the women’s 200-yard medley relay. East Carolina took fifth, 10th and 16th place in the event. Juniors Kylie Francis, Stephanie Harper and Jenna Stewart teamed up with freshman Holly Berenotto to lead the way, finishing in 1:47.18. Freshman Kayla Ford, classmate Elizabeth Oliver, senior Katlin Potts and sophomore Kelsey Brosi took second for ECU with a time of 1:48.34 while the final group of freshman Heather O'Toole, junior Courtney Harris, freshman Pamela Hess and sophomore Kali Gaskill completed the race in 1:50.09.
Next for the women was the 400-yard individual medley, where senior Jackie Jones finished second in the “A” finals with a time of 4:24.10. Junior Lauren Dufault joined Jones in the top heat and finished in 4:27.72 to claim fourth. In the “B” finals, Oliver (4:33.85), sophomore Kristen Giese (4:34.65) and freshman Hannah Lee (4:34.88) came in sixth through eighth. The “C” race had sophomore Brittany Radcliffe placing third with a time of 4:34.38.
Stewart paced the women in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing in 0:56.92 to tie for seventh in the “A” finals. The “B” heat had Lee clock out at 0:58.53 for seventh place. Potts (0:58.12) took third and Hess (0:58.57) tied for sixth in the “C” finals.
In the 200-yard freestyle, senior Rachel Blue timed out at 1:51.03 to take fifth place in the “A” finals. In the next heat, sophomore Michelle Gadowry also came in fifth, finishing with a time of 1:52.90. Rounding out the ECU women in the event was Berenotto, who checked in fifth at 1:55.13 the “C” finals.
Harper followed up that strong showing with a 1:04.18 performance in the 100-yard breaststroke, good for second place. Oliver (1:07.11) finished fifth in the “B” finals while Harris (1:06.64) won the “C” heat.
The “B” heat of the 100-yard backstroke was won by Ford with a time of 0:57.36. Francis (0:58.07) and Brosi (0:58.13) took third and fourth in the same heat. O’Toole (0:58.65) also completed the event for the Pirates, claiming third in the “C” finals.
In the one-meter diving, sophomore Meghan Coyne totaled 280.75 points to claim fifth place while freshman Kirstie Russell picked up 248.65 points to grab 10th.
The women closed the day with the 800-yard freestyle relay, claiming fourth and 12th places. Jones, Blue, Brosi and Gadowry finished in 7:37.81 while Gaskill, O’Toole, sophomore Caitlin Marsilli and freshman Anna Holland Lawrence timed out at 7:48.04.
The men followed the same order as the women, starting the day with the 200-yard medley relay. Junior Roman Sandler, sophomore Travis Stauder, junior Andrew Stoker and senior Jason Guzewich took third place in the event with a time of 1:33.46. Taking 11th place was the group of freshmen Andy Richter, J.D. Flanagan, Geoffrey Bobsin and sophomore Ailton Temotio as the team clocked out in 1:35.49.
In the 400-yard individual medley, senior Jeffrey Miller (4:11.57) and freshman Turner Haigwood (4:12.52) took fourth and fifth in the “C” finals.
Leading the way for the men in the 100-yard butterfly was Stoker, who took second place with a time of 0:49.57. Temotio (0:51.02) and Sandler (0:51.75) claimed fifth and eighth in the “B” finals while freshman Chris Borysewicz (0:51.25) and Flanagan (0:51.70) took the third and fifth spots in the final heat.
Junior Thiago Cavalcanti finished first for the Pirates in the 200-yard freestyle, checking in at 1:41.53 for seventh place. Sophomore Jonathan Bailey joined Cavalcanti in the top heat, placing eighth with a time of 1:42.21. Senior Blake Briese (1:43.21) and junior Andrew Christian (1:43.46) took second and fourth in the “C” finals.
The 100-yard breaststroke had ECU taking sixth as Stauder finished in 0:57.66. Guzewich was the only other competitor who made the finals, and he too placed sixth, in the “B” heat, with a time of 0:59.89.
Pacing the team in the 100-yard backstroke was Richter, who finished in 0:52.72 for seventh place in the “B” finals. Sandler (0:52.32), sophomore Miles Maximini (0:52.83) and Bobsin (0:53.23) all competed in the “C” heat and came in fourth, sixth and seventh place.
In the three-meter diving, freshmen Tyler Dunsmore and Alex Cohen collected 282.00 and 227.95 to place ninth and 10th.
Completing the day’s events was the men’s 800-yard freestyle relay. The Pirates captured the fifth and 11th spots. Cavalcanti, Bailey, Christian and Briese completed the race in 6:52.79. The other team of Borysewicz, junior Billy Gordon, freshman Patrick Lytle and Stauder timed out at 6:58.73.
The men’s and women’s teams finish the Gamecock Invitational tomorrow with preliminary rounds starting at 10 a.m. and noon, and final events beginning at 3 and 6 p.m.
