Men Place Fifth, Women Fourth At Gamecock Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. - After three days of competition at the Gamecock Invitational at the University of South Carolina's Sol Blatt P.E. Center and Carolina Natatorium, the East Carolina University men's swimming and diving team finished in fifth place of seven squads while the Pirate women took fourth of nine.
Today's action began with the women's 1,650-yard freestyle. ECU sophomore Michelle Gadowry placed 14th with a time of 17:24.10. Classmate Caitlin Marsilli timed out at 17:33.32 to claim 18th place while freshman Ashley Wagoner (17:44.95) and sophomore Brittany Radcliffe (17:46.46) took 20th and 21st.
Freshman Kayla Ford turned in a second-place performance in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing in 2:02.11. Junior Kylie Francis claimed first place in the "B" finals with a time of 2:03.34. Freshman Heather O'Toole was in the same heat and timed out at 2:04.61 to finish fourth. Closing the event for ECU was sophomore Kelsey Brosi, who won the "C" finals with a 2:04.22 time.
In the 100-yard freestyle, junior Jenna Stewart placed third, finishing in 0:50.63. In the "B" heat, senior Rachel Blue timed out at 0:52.34 to come in fourth. Freshman Holly Berenotto trailed right behind, finishing in 0:52.66 to take fifth. Sophomore Kali Gaskill checked in eighth in the heat with a time of 0:53.02. Senior Katlin Potts turned in a 0:52.89 time to take sixth in the "C" finals.
With a 2:19.04 time in the 200-yard breaststroke, junior Stephanie Harper earned a fifth-place finish. Freshman Elizabeth Oliver (2:21.49), senior Jackie Jones (2:22.29) and junior Courtney Harris (2:24.97) took second, third and seventh in the "B" finals. Sophomore Kristen Giese concluded the ECU racers, finishing in 2:23.61 to win the "C" heat.
Freshman Hannah Lee was the top Pirate finisher in the 200-yard butterfly, taking seventh in the "B" finals with a time of 2:06.23. Classmate Pamela Hess (2:07.26) and junior Lauren Dufault (2:09.43) finished fourth and seventh in the "C" heat.
The final event was the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Brosi, Stewart, Blue and Berenotto placed fourth with a time of 3:27.42. Gaskill, Francis, Potts and O'Toole were not far behind, checking out at 3:32.81 to claim seventh.
The men's events also began with the 1,650-yard freestyle, as junior Thiago Cavalcanti took fourth with a time of 15:38.90. Sophomore Jonathan Bailey was not far behind, clocking out at 15:39.87 to claim sixth place. Junior Billy Gordon also competed in the event, finishing 21st at 16:28.31.
Freshman Mike Jolly was the top performer in the 200-yard backstroke, taking fifth in the "B" finals with a time of 1:53.26. Sophomore Miles Maximini (1:53.83) and junior Roman Sandler (1:55.16) finished just behind in sixth and seventh place. Freshman Andy Richter took fourth in the "C" finals with a time of 1:56.52.
Freshman Geoffrey Bobsin (0:47.39) and senior Jason Guzewich (0:47.93) were the Pirate participants in the 100-yard freestyle, taking fifth and seventh in "C" finals.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, sophomore Travis Stauder was the only Pirate to reach the finals. He timed out at 2:07.00 to claim seventh place.
East Carolina had its strongest performance in the 200-yard butterfly as junior Andrew Stoker won the event with a time of 1:49.63. Cavalcanti (1:52.19) and freshman Chris Borysewicz (1:52.28) joined Stoker in the top heat and finished seventh and eighth. In the "B" finals, freshman J.D. Flanagan timed out at 1:54.46 to claim fifth. In the "C" heat, senior Jeffrey Miller took second with a time of 1:55.28 while freshman Turner Haigwood finished seventh, checking in at 1:57.94.
In the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the team of Bobsin, sophomore Ailton Temotio, Guzewich and Borysewicz took 11th with a time of 3:08.68. ECU's other group of junior Andrew Christian, freshman Patrick Lytle, senior Blake Briese and Richter claimed 17th with a 3:11.67 effort.
The Pirates return to action in two weeks for the Short Course National Championships in Federal Way, Wash., Dec. 3-5.
