GREENSBORO, N.C. - Darrius Morrow scored a career-high 22 points and had nine rebounds to lead East Carolina to an 82-61 victory over UNC Greensboro on Saturday at the Greensboro Coliseum.
Brock Young, who had seven assists, and Jamar Abrams scored 15 points each for the Pirates. Chad Wynn and Jontae Sherrod added 10 points each for East Carolina.
Kendall Toney led UNC Greensboro with 19 points. Korey Van Dussen and Kyle Randall added 13 points each.
East Carolina (3-4) raced out to a 14-4 lead as Abrams sank two of his three first half treys in the opening six minutes while UNCG missed its first seven shots from the field. The Pirates pushed their lead to 14 at halftime, 37-23, after holding the Spartans scoreless over the final 4:18 of the first half.
The Spartans shot just 23.5 percent from the field in the opening half (8-for-34), while Pirates shot 51.7 percent (15-for-29).
East Carolina finished the game shooting 58.2 percent from the floor, which was a season-high. The Pirates also had a commanding 44-16 edge in points in the paint for the game. Morrow was a big part of that, going 9-for-11 from the floor and also grabbing nine rebounds.
UNC Greensboro (1-4) opened the second half on a 17-6 run to cut the lead to 46-45 on Kyle Randall's 3-pointer with 13:12 remaining, but ECU scored the next 11 points for a 57-45 lead with 10:54 left.
Young, Abrams and Sherrod sank back-to-back-to-back 3s to push their lead back to double figures in less than two minutes before the run was capped by a dunk from Morrow.
Sherrod put an exclamation point on the victory with a thunderous dunk for 79-60 lead with 1:28 to play.
ECU continues its tour of the state Wednesday, Dec. 2, as it takes on former Conference USA rival Charlotte. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Halton Arena on the UNCC campus.
