GREENVILLE, N.C. --- Damian Hollis scored nine of his game-high 21 points in overtime to lead George Washington to an 84-80 victory over East Carolina Tuesday in the first meeting of the two former Southern Conference foes since 1973. Hollis went 6-for-6 at the free throw line in the extra session after opening the period with a three-point basket.
The Pirates were held without a field goal in overtime, scoring all seven of their points at the free throw line.
The Colonials (8-2), who improved to 4-0 on the road this season, were able to force overtime when Dwayne Smith's put back softly rolled over the rim as time expired in regulation. Jamar Abrams had given the Pirates (5-7) a 73-71 advantage with 13.5 seconds left by draining a three-pointer from the right corner.
Neither side held more than a six-point advantage in the second half. ECU led by one at halftime and stretched its lead to six, 52-46, on a breakaway dunk by Jontae Sherrod with 13:29 to go. The Pirates were either ahead or tied for the first nine minutes after intermission.
GW assumed its first lead of the second half when Hollis drained a three-pointer with 11:01 to go cap a 9-2 spurt for a one-point lead. Tony Taylor followed with another three-pointer to push the Colonials to their largest lead of the half, 58-54.
With GW still clinging to a four-point lead, Brock Young and Darrius Morrow sank four consecutive free throws to tie the game at 66 with 3:36 remaining. Bryan Bynes then drilled a trey to put GW back on top before Young and Sherrod scored consecutive baskets for a one-point lead with 1:36 left.
Young led the Pirates with 20 points and 10 assists. Chad Wynn added a season-high 17 points; Abrams netted 15, Sherrod had 13 and Morrow added 10 as all five starters scored double figures.
Following a timeout, Taylor's jumper put the Colonials back ahead with 27 seconds remaining to set the stage for the dramatic conclusion to regulation.
Taylor scored 20 points; Smith added 11 and Aaron Ware dropped in 10 points for the Colonials.
A chaotic first half saw the two teams trade baskets for the first six minutes resulting in six ties without a lead change. The Colonials built a seven-point lead, 22-15, with 11:15 to go in the first half following a 9-2 run over a three-minute stretch.
Five players scored during a 19-4 run that propelled the Pirates to an eight-point lead, 34-26, with 3:56 remaining in the opening half. Following a three-pointer by Sherrod, Morrow and Wynn scored on the inside giving ECU its largest lead of the game.
The Pirates were held without a field goal the remainder of the half as GW scored the final seven points of the opening 20 minutes.
East Carolina will return to action Tuesday, Dec. 29, against VCU. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Richmond, Va.
