GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams will usher in 2010 with their annual winter training trip which culminates Friday, Jan. 1, with a tri-meet against Loras College and Northern Colorado.
The Pirates concluded the fall semester with a combined dual meet record of 9-3. The men's team compiled a 4-1 record, while the ladies posted a 5-2 mark.
Sophomore Meghan Coyne was named Conference USA Diver-of-the-Week four times during the semester and also qualified for the NCAA Regional Zone Championships on the one and three-meter springboard.
Senior Rachel Blue also received the weekly Swimmer-of-the-Week accolade following her performance against Gardner-Webb and Davidson on which she won all four events in which she competed.
Junior Thiago Cavalcanti made his NCAA `B' cut in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:26.79 to earn a second-place finish at the Gamecock Invitational. The Pirates concluded the four-day meet at the University of South Carolina with 114 season bests times established. Junior Jenna Stewart used the meet to post the fastest times of the season in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle by a Conference USA swimmer.
"We had a very fast fall semester," Pirate coach Rick Kobe said. "Our kids made some great strides during the fall and we are looking to use the training trip to post even faster times in January and February."
Following its training trip, ECU will return to action against Old Dominion on Jan. 16.
