GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's tennis squad split a pair of non-conference matches Friday at the ECU Tennis Complex, defeating North Carolina Central 7-0 in the nightcap after suffering a 4-3 setback to Coastal Carolina in the opener.
In their shutout of the Lady Eagles, the Lady Pirates rolled to a 16-0 doubles record and used a default win to garner the opening tally before following with a 60-9 singles record and another default point to close out the scoring.
Natalie Collins and Tamara Sachs, along with Jessica Cook and Kristin Gordon, logged 8-0 tandem triumphs over NCCU's Kateryna Chorna/Ashley Rogers and Maritsann Sinclair/Antionette Spain. In singles play, Sachs produced a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 while Brooke Walter and Gordon each delivered 6-0, 6-1 victories at No. 1 and No. 5, respectively, to help East Carolina cruise past the Lady Eagles in convincing fashion.
In the afternoon tilt, Coastal Carolina (4-1) claimed two of three doubles matches to notch the first point before the two teams split singles play. The Chanticleers' Lexi Bolesky turned in the clinching tally, using a 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Cook at the No. 1 position to push Coastal Carolina past a 3-2 edge and capture the match-winning point.
The Lady Pirates and Chanticleers each picked up two-set victories during singles play prior to Bolesky's win. ECU's Varinia Soler defeated Tina Petkova 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 and Walter dismissed Caitlyn Brooksbank 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4, while CCU posted triumphs at the No. 5 and No. 6 slots as Patricia Cortes and Maria Camberos recorded 6-3, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-4 wins over Rocio Cabanillas and Sachs, respectively.
In addition to Soler and Walter's victories, Collins outlasted Kim Webb 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 in a No. 3 matchup that was completed after the Chanticleers secured the team win.
In doubles action, ECU's Cabanillas and Walter turned in the Lady Pirates' only win of the match by earning an 8-6 decision over Cortes and Petkova at No. 2.
East Carolina (2-1) will return to action Saturday when it hosts Appalachian State in a match beginning at 9 a.m., one hour earlier than the originally scheduled because of the forecast of inclement weather.
