Pirates Compete At Day One Of C-USA Championships

HOUSTON --- The East Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams each sit in fourth place after day one of the 2009 Conference USA Championships and Invitational.
The men's team scored 42 points on Wednesday and trails North Dakota by three points for third place. SMU is in first place with 114 points followed closely by Hawaii with 112 points.
The women's team tallied 56 points and trails Houston by six points for third place, while being just 10 points behind Rice for second. SMU leads the field with 80 points.
The women's 200-yard medley relay team of Alli Miller, Stephanie Harper, Amanda Duncan and Jenna Stewart earned a fifth-place finish with a time of 1:42.39. Their male counterpart team of Roman Sandler, Tommy Ryan, Junior Temotio and Jason Guzewich placed fourth in the same event (1:34.23).
Kelsey Brosi, Rachel Blue, Brennan Gaeckle and Brittany Radcliffe teamed to earn a fifth place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:33.20), while the men's team of Thiago Cavalcanti, Jonathan Bailey, Blake Briese and Travis Stauder placed fourth (6:46.28)
The finals of the one-meter diving competition was also held Wednesday night with ECU senior Matt Larson finishing seventh with a score of 189.70
The meet resumes at 10 a.m., Thursday with the preliminaries of the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley and the 50-yard freestyle. The women's 3-meter diving preliminaries will begin around 1 p.m. The finals for those events are slated to begin around 6 p.m.
