Lady Pirates Roll Past S.C. State, 6-1

ORANGEBURG, S.C. - Behind the strength of an early doubles point and five singles victories, East Carolina posted a 6-1 non-conference women's tennis triumph over South Carolina State Tuesday afternoon and halted the Bulldogs' seven-match win streak.

The Lady Pirates (9-2) used an 8-2 victory by Rocio Cabanillas and Brooke Walter over Amy Chen and Fanni Fricska in a No. 2 doubles matchup and benefitted from a default win at No. 3 to take an early 1-0 lead.

In singles play, East Carolina recorded straight-set wins at the No. 1, No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 slots and earned a default decision at the No. 6 position to secure its fourth consecutive victory. Cabanillas opened play by blanking Tatiana Varela 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 before top-seeded Jessica Cook dismissed Fricska 6-2, 6-1. In addition to Cabanillas and Cook, Natalie Collins and Walter added 6-4, 3-2 (retired) and 6-1, 7-5 wins at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, after Sachs was awarded a default point.

South Carolina State (9-3) tallied its only point of the match when Daria Sekerina handed Varinia Soler a 6-1, 6-1 loss in a No. 2 meeting.

The Lady Pirates will close out their three-match road swing Wednesday at 9 a.m. when they face No. 17 North Carolina in a neutral site battle at Hilton Head, S.C.
