GREENVILLE, N.C - The East Carolina women's tennis squad was one of 11 athletic teams from Conference USA to earn the NCAA Public Recognition Award, based on the release of NCAA Division I 2008-09 Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores that ranked among the top 10 percent Wednesday.
The Lady Pirates netted a perfect score of 1,000 in the APR, which provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete.
Four other C-USA schools - Rice, SMU, Tulsa and UTEP - each fielded teams that were recognized, but head coach Tom Morris' program was the only women's tennis team that was recognized in the league.
The APR includes eligibility, retention, and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.
