Women's Hoops Holds Annual Awards Banquet

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Senior guard LaCoya Terry was named team MVP at the 2009 East Carolina women's basketball awards banquet, held Sunday afternoon in the club level of Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. The award is the second-straight for Terry, joining classmate Jasmine Young as a two-time consecutive winner.
A native of Hephzibah, Ga., Terry earned First-Team All-Conference USA honors, becoming just the second player in school history to garner the accolade. The senior led the Lady Pirates in scoring, pouring in 17.5 points per contest to rank second in C-USA and 46th nationally. She will leave the program ranked third in scoring, tied for fourth in assists, sixth in three-point field goals made and steals and seventh in free throw accuracy. Terry is also the leading active scorer in C-USA history and currently ranks 14th on the league's career chart. Additionally, she was named to the 2008-09 All-C-USA Preseason Team and collected three conference player-of-the-week honors in her career.
Head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener passed out six other individual honors during the presentation. Sophomore Kim Gay received the Rebounding, Most Improved Player and Scholar-Athlete Awards. Gay led ECU in rebounding with 5.2 per contest while starting 27 of the Lady Pirates' 31 games. The Eastman Ga. native also tripled her scoring average to 7.2 points per game and grabbed five times as many rebounds as she did her freshman campaign. Gay boasts the highest cumulative GPA on the squad with a 3.58 mark.
Senior Gabriela Husarova earned the Coaches Award after picking up the Most Improved Player accolade last season. The Poprad, Slovakia native started 17 of 31 contests while notching 16-straight starts from Dec. 6 to Feb. 5. Husarova played in her 100th career game at Tulsa on Jan. 8 and ended her career having participated in 116 contests. The senior also ranked fourth on the team in three-point field goals made.
Having been named to her third-straight C-USA All-Defensive Team, Young picked up the Defensive Award. The Richmond, Va. native ranked second on the squad in steals and tied for third in defensive rebounds. She also finished first for ECU and 27th nationally in assists while sitting second on the squad in scoring. Young graduates as the fourth-leading scorer in program history and currently sits 18th on the C-USA career ledger. The senior will leave the Lady Pirates ranked in the top two in career three-point field goals made (first), assists (second) and steals (second). Additionally, her 665 assists are good for third all-time in league history. Young was also a C-USA Second Team honoree this season, as she earned the designation all four years of her career.
The final award, the Deflection Award, went to freshman Crystal Wilson. The Raleigh, N.C. native was extremely active on defense, ranking third on the team in steals and fourth in rebounding. Wilson scored a career-high 10 points each in the two games with UCF while grabbing a personal-best 13 rebounds against Marshall in ECU's conference opener against Marshall. She was also a valuable asset off of the bench, recording 20 or more minutes of playing time in nine contests.
For his service and dedication to the Lady Pirates, manager BJ DeBuchannane was presented with the Sixth Man Award.
In addition to the individual recognitions, Baldwin-Tener presented 1,500 career-point basketballs to Terry and Young, while the head coach also received a basketball commemorating her 100th win at East Carolina, which occurred Feb. 15 in an overtime win against C-USA Tournament champion UCF.
