
Swimming Teams Split With Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. -- It was a split for the East Carolina swimming and diving teams on Saturday with the Old Dominion Monarchs.
The ECU women picked up a 170-130 victory over the Monarchs with six victories led by Jenna Stewart with wins in the 50 and 100-yard free. The win over ODU upped the Pirates' record to 8-2 on the season.
The ECU men fell to the Monarchs by a score of 171-117 dropping their overall record to 5-2 on the year. The Pirates earned just three first-place finishes with Thiago Cavalcanti bringing home wins in the 200 and 500-yard free and Andrew Stoker in the 100-yard fly.
All three Pirate divers that competed qualified for the NCAA Zone Regional Saturday. Meghan Coyne, who had previously qualified for the NCAA, broke the ODU pool record on the three-meter springboard with a score of 321.30. Tyler Dunsmore also received the high score from the judges on the three-meter board on the men's side to earn a birth in the NCAA.
Freshman Kirstie Russell set an ODU pool record and ECU freshman record on the one-meter springboard with a score of 297.38 to earn a spot in the regional.
Kelsey Brosi posted the ladies' first victory of the meet with a two-second win over teammate Holly Berenotto in the 200-yard free before Stewart won her two events.
The ladies closed out the meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay with Kali Gaskill joining Berenotto, Brosi and Stewart to earn the victory.
ECU will return to the pool Wednesday, Jan. 20, against N.C. State. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. in Raleigh.
