HATTIESBURG, MISS. --- Gary Flowers scored 14 points to lead a quartet of Golden Eagles in double figures as Southern Miss defeated East Carolina 68-53 at Reed Green Coliseum Saturday night.

With the game knotted a 16-all, ECU went on an 8-2 spurt to take a six-point lead, the largest advantage of the half by either team, with 3:33 remaining. Gaines' layup broke the tie and his first 3 of the year pushed it the lead further.

The Golden Eagles proceeded to outscor the Pirates 24-7 over the next nine minutes to take a 59-47 lead with less than four minutes to play. Awaji's 3-pointer with 9:43 to play put Southern Miss up 44-42 and gave it the lead that it never relinquished.
USM scored 18 second chance points in the second half, securing 12 second half offensive rebounds. The Golden Eagles out-rebounded the Pirates 34-21 for the game and dominated play on the interior with 42 points in the paint.
Both teams shot the ball at nearly 50 percent clip. USM finished the game 26-of-54 (48.1 percent) and ECU connected on 20-of-42 field goal attempts (47.6 percent).
