
Women's Tennis Opens Season With Two Wins

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The East Carolina women's tennis team opened the 2010 season with a pair of victories at the Aggie Tennis Complex on Friday. The Pirates defeated N.C. A&T, 5-2 and blanks N.C. Central, 6-0.
Audrey LePottier paced the team at the No.1 position by winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 against Jaymee Jones. Jessica Cook followed in the No.2 spot with a three set win over Winnie Quick. Cook struggled; dropping the first set and winning the second set by one but recovered and won the third set 6-1.
Additional ECU singles wins were turned in by Tamara Sachs at No. 3 (6-1, 7-5 over Cayla Cross) and Yilian Zhang at No.4 (6-0, 6-0 over Nianna Henry). Kristin Gordon and Sheelah Iyengar drop their matches in three sets to give N.C. A&T their two points.
East Carolina opened strong; winning all three doubles matches with a 24-11 record. Leading off freshman Petra Vogel partnered with senior Brooke Walter to defeat Jaymee Jones and Azeib Nigatu 8-2 while junior Sachs and freshman Abby Richmond teamed up to post an 8-5 triumph over Winnie Quick and Cayla Cross. East Carolina finishes the sweep when Kristin Gordon and Jessica Cook held off Nianna Henry and Nina Henry, 8-4.
Against N.C. Central in the afternoon match, the Lady Pirates captured all six singles matches, four in straight sets but did not play doubles. At No.1 and No.2 LePottier and Natalie Collins go three sets but outlast their opponents. ECU notched straight-set triumphs in the last four flights.
The Pirates will return to action Friday when they travel to North Carolina State in a match scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
