
Baseball Lands Two On CAA Anniversary Team

Richmond, Va. - Former East Carolina standouts Tommy Eason and Winfred Johnson have been named to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Baseball Silver Anniversary team. A panel of current and former conference coaches selected the team.
Eason, who played for the Pirates from 1989-91, was a two-time All-CAA selection (1989-90) that helped the Pirates three consecutive tournament titles from 1989-91 and the 1990 regular season crown. In three season at ECU, he batted over .300 and finished his career with a .336 average, which ranks 11th all-time in school history. During the 1990 season, Eason batted .366 and led the CAA in home runs (17) and RBI (62).
The Snow Hill, N.C. native was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the sixth round (pick 162) of the 1991 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, where he spent four seasons in the minors hitting .285 with 30 home runs and 145 RBI. Eason joined the Pirates as an assistant coach from 1998-2005 before being named head coach at Pitt Community College in the fall of 2005, where he has guided the Bulldogs to a 140-58 overall record, including the 2008 Region X Tournament title.
Johnson was a two-time All-America selection (1985-86) and four-year letter winner and helped the Pirates to a pair of Eastern College Athletic Conference South (ECAC) regular season crowns (1984-85), the 1984 ECAC Tournament championship and its first CAA regular season title in 1986. During his four seasons, he led ECU to a 117-54-1 record, including an appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 1984.
The Elizabethtown, N.C. native and 2001 ECU Hall of Fame inductee set 18 season and 21 career records at ECU from 1983-86, including the standards for career home runs (70), RBI (221), and pitching victories (35). He was the first player in NCAA history to hit 70 home runs and post 35 pitching victories in a career. Johnson was a two-time ECAC South Player-of-the-Year (1984-85) selection and took home the same honors from the CAA in 1986.

The Pirates, who won seven CAA championships over a 14-year span including four in a row from 1988-91, appeared in eight NCAA Regionals and earned a No. 6 national seed in 2001 under former ECU skipper Keith LeClair.
