GREENVILLE, N.C. - Sophomore guard Crystal Wilson has suffered a knee injury that will force her to miss the remainder of the 2009-10 East Carolina women's basketball season, according to an announcement by head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener Wednesday. The injury occurred in the first half of the Lady Pirates' 73-59 loss at SMU Jan. 23.
"We are deeply saddened that this has happened to Crystal," Baldwin-Tener stated. "She was playing very well for us and is a great contributor to our team. However, she is a strong young woman and will be able to bounce back from this. I look forward to having her with us for two more seasons."
Wilson is currently ranked first on the team in field goal percentage at .553, second in steals (37) and third with 9.6 points per game and 42 assists. In league games, she is averaging 8.8 points per contest and has racked up 10 steals. Among Conference USA players, Wilson is fourth in field goal percentage.
As ECU's top player off of the bench, Wilson has scored in double figures six times this season, including a career-high 20 points against Binghamton at the Fordham Holiday Classic Dec. 29. She followed that performance with 18 in the league play-opening 78-54 victory over Marshall Jan. 4 at Minges Coliseum. In the two contests combined, she averaged 19 points on 15-for-20 shooting. Wilson was also a key contributor in the 63-60 road win over 2009 WNIT Champion South Florida, picking up 14 points, five assists and three steals on her way to helping East Carolina capture the South Florida Shootout title.
The Lady Pirates return to the hardwood Thursday, Jan. 28 as they host league-leading UAB. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Minges Coliseum.
