IRVING, Texas --- After winning his first career individual tournament championship by nine shots Tuesday at the Old Dominion/Outer Banks Collegiate, ECU junior Harold Varner was recognized Wednesday as the Conference USA Golfer-of-the-Week.
Varner fired rounds of seven-under 65, six-under 66 and seven-under 65 for a winning 54-hole score of 20-under 196, the lowest three-round score in school history, at the Kilmaric Golf Club at Powells Point, N.C.
Varner shattered his previous career-low tournament score of 209 by 13 strokes becoming the first Pirate golfer to post a score under 200 in a 54-hole event. He made a tournament-best 21 birdies and one eagle against just three bogeys. The Pirates captured the team title by 23 strokes over Richmond while setting a team record for lowest 54-hole score at 37-under 827.
It's the first weekly honor of the season for Varner and second of his career.
