GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina received a combined 35 digs from junior Nicole Jones and freshman Andrea Queck Sunday, but Houston claimed a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-11) victory at Minges Coliseum. The Pirates are now 1-23 overall and 0-12 in C-USA play while the Cougars improve to 15-10 and 9-4.
Queck recorded a career-high 11 digs to go along with 24 by Jones. Additionally, Kasey Kavanaugh nearly tallied the first double-double of her career with 24 assists and a season-best nine digs.
Offensively, Whitney Campbell racked up a team-best eight kills as well as one of ECU's two block assists.
Aided by 20 kills from Lucy Charuk, Houston enjoyed a 50-26 advantage while the Cougars also held the upper hand in hitting (.266-.067), service aces (4-1), digs (64-58) and total blocks (3.0-1.0).
After Campbell gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead with a kill from the left side, Houston ripped off a 7-1 run to draw a timeout from the East Carolina sideline. ECU rallied to within two points at 8-6, but the Cougars answered with four-straight scores to establish some breathing room. The Pirates came no closer than three the rest of the set as Houston won the frame by seven.
With the Cougars up by just one, 7-6, in the second interval, a 7-2 Houston run seemingly put the set out of reach. However, trailing 20-14, East Carolina scored eight of the next 10 points by taking advantage of Cougar attacking errors to tie things at 22. The Pirates could not complete the comeback as Houston collected the last three points.
The third set was all Cougars as they took leads of 7-3, 15-8 and 23-10 to cruise to the win.
ECU takes to the road for its next four matches, beginning Friday, Nov. 5 at Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane swept the Pirates in Greenville Oct. 17. First serve at the Reynolds Center is set for 8 p.m.
