TULSA, Okla. - East Carolina kicked off a four-game road swing in Tulsa Friday, but the 25th-ranked Golden Hurricane proved too much, capturing a 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-12) win at the Reynolds Center. The Pirates are 1-24 overall and 0-13 in league play while Tulsa won its 23rd-straight match and moved to 24-2 and 14-0
Juniors Amanda Lutzow and Nicole Jones combined for 25 digs to lead the defense, which collected 37 in the three sets. Offensively, Lutzow put down a team-high six kills while sophomore Kelly Derby was the top force at the net with three blocks.
The Hurricane enjoyed a .305 hitting mark and held East Carolina to zero percent. Both teams tallied 95 attempts, but the Pirates committed 20 errors as compared to 11 for TU. Tulsa also held a 4-3 advantage in blocking.
ECU fell behind 5-0 before Jessica Adams committed a service error to give the visitors their first point of the match. Tulsa stayed comfortably ahead from there, extending the advantage to 12-4 on an attack error by Whitney Campbell. A 12-6 run quickly ended the set as Elizabeth Kale put a ball down to give the Hurricane a 1-0 lead in the contest.
With the score tied at five in the second frame, the Hurricane went on a 9-4 run to force a timeout from the Pirate sideline. Tulsa then scored the next three points on an ace and two kills to make head coach Pati Rolf burn East Carolina's second timeout. The Hurricane doubled up the Pirates the rest of the way, 8-4, to cruise into intermission with a two-set lead.
ECU stayed close at the outset of the third interval, trailing by just one at 5-4, but Tulsa scored eight of the next 10 points to push in front by seven. The Pirates cut the deficit back to nine points at 17-8 on a Lutzow kill, but the Hurricane proved too much, eventually taking the 13-point match-clinching margin.
East Carolina is back in action Sunday, traveling to Dallas, Texas for a matchup with SMU. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Moody Coliseum.
