Blacksburg, Va. - The East Carolina women's tennis team continued its fall schedule last weekend at the Hokie Fall Invitational at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Sophomore Yilian Zhang continued her strong season by finishing sixth in the Flight D bracket.
Zhang began by downing Carol Lobel-Castro of Liberty University (7-5, 6-4). In her second match, she faced a setback, losing to Andra Voinea of East Tennessee State in straight sets (6-1, 6-1). Zhang bounced back by defeating Julia Gragera-Cano of UMBC (6-1, 2-1 ret.) before falling against Joanna Matuszczyk of Richmond (6-4, 6-1) to take sixth.
In the Flight E bracket, freshman Manon Bissat started by falling to Giulia Andreazza of East Tennessee State in three sets (3-6, 6-3, 6-4). Bisset then advanced by default to her next opponent Sara Tegner of Radford University. She pushed past Tegner (6-2, 6-1) and then took ninth place by defeating Tea Ivanovic of the host Hokies (7-6(4), 6-3). Senior Kristin Gordon and freshman Vanessa Fuleihan both ended their singles brackets without a win.
In doubles play, Zhang and Bissat teamed to produce a 2-2 record as they defeated Hannah Frick and Rebekah Jenkins of Liberty (8-3) and Samantha Galainena and Alison Rauh from Davidson (8-6).
The Lady Pirates continue fall play when they travel to Elon for the Elon Invitational. The tournament is scheduled for Oct. 8th-10th, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
