Pirates Win Trio Of Meets

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina swimming and diving teams returned to action after a two-week hiatus Saturday afternoon with a trio of victories in a tri-dual against Campbell and College of Charleston at Minges Natatorium.
The ladies team improved to 4-2 on the season with 178-90 win over Campbell and a 176-105 triumph over College of Charleston. The men's team won its fourth consecutive dual meet with a 173-110 win over CofC to improve to 4-1.
The Pirates posted the fastest times and highest scores in 29 of 32 events. ECU finished one, two and three in 16 events.
Junior Natalia Favoreto posted a trio of individual first-place finishes. She touched ahead of the field in the 50 free (23.10), missing the NCAA `B' cut by a tenth of a second, and out in front in the 100 breast (1:03.65), two-tenth of a second shy of the pool record. Favoreto was also a winner in the 200 IM (2:07.00) as well as helping the 200 medley relay team capture first-place.
Kylie Francis swept the backstroke events winning the 200 by more than three seconds and touching more than a second in front of the runner-up in the 100.
Tommy Ryan won both the breaststroke events on the men's side, each by more than a second over one of his teammates.
Thiago Cavalcanti dominated the middle-distance free events, finishing seven seconds in front of his nearest competitor in the 500 free and nearly two seconds in the 200 free.
Cavalcanti's win in the 500 free assured an ECU victory in the 25th event, while Kristen Giese's triumph in the 200 breast secured a win for the ladies in the 22nd event.
The lady divers claimed the first five spots on both boards with Meghan Coyne winning both the one and three-meter springboard competitions. Kirstie Russell and Katie Yamamoto each posted NCAA Regional Zone qualifying score.
Similarly the men's divers finished one, two and three on both boards. Tyler Dunsmore finished first on the one-meter board and Andrew Galvagni won the three-meter springboard.
The Pirates return to competition, Thursday, Nov. 18 at the prestigious Nike Cup in Chapel Hill, N.C. The preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. inside Koury Natatorium.
