CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- East Carolina senior Jenna Stewart set a new varsity record in the 50 free with a time of 22.78 during the preliminaries on the opening day of the 2010 Nike Cup at UNC's Koury Natatorium.
Her time was the fifth-fastest posted by any NCAA sprinter this season and met the NCAA 'B' cut qualifying standard. She finished second in the finals with a time of 22.85.
Junior Natalia Favoreto finished in fifth-place behind her teammate with a time of 23.23.
In addition to their individual performances, Favoreto and Stewart helped a pair of relay teams to scoring finishes. Accompanied by Kelsey Brosi and Kylie Francis, the foursome recorded a third-place finish in the 200-free relay. Anna Gibas and Pamela Hess joined Favoreto and Stewart for the 400-medley relay and posted a seventh-place finish.
Senior Thiago Cavalcanti had the men's lone scoring performance with a seventh-place finish in the 500 free (4:28.60).
Lauren Dufault, Kristen Giese and Travis Stauder all reached the finals of the 200 IM, but didn't score, as did Brosi and Geoffrey Bobsin in the 500 free.
The competition continues Friday and Saturday at Koury Natatorium.
