GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The first edition of East Carolina University men's basketball team under coach Jeff Lebo makes its debut Friday night when the Pirates host Montreat College inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum in an exhibition game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Pirates' lone exhibition opponent comes to Greenville with an 0-2 record having suffered losses to Emmanuel College and Martin Methodist.
"I'm looking for execution," said Lebo. "I'm looking for guys that can do what I ask them to do, that are accountable, dependable and reliable. The other thing is I want to see people be able to defend.
"I want to be able to look out there and not know if we are up 20 or down 20 by their body language. That's what good teams look like."
Friday night's contest will be the first of the final season for a quartet of Pirate seniors: Jamar Abrams, Jontae Sherrod, Chad Wynn and Brock Young. The foursome was responsible for 64 percent of the Pirates' offense last year, averaging 42.7 points per game amongst the group.
Juniors DaQuan Joyner and Darrius Morrow return as upperclassmen, although Joyner will not play in Friday night's game due to a foot injury. Morrow led Conference USA in field goal percentage last season and was the Pirates' leading rebounder and second-leading scorer.
Sophomores Wakefield Ellison, Corvonn Gaines, Evan Salzano and Erin Straughn are also back in the mix this season.
Redshirt freshman Darius Morales will make his ECU debut Friday night after a season of acclimating himself to the collegiate game and adding muscle and weight to his 6-foot-8 frame. Freshmen Robert Sampson and Petar Torlak are also expected to see their first action as Pirates.
Montreat has averaged 66.5 points through their first two games paced by junior Giles Mack with 12.5 points per game. ECU is the first of three Division I exhibition opponents for the Cavaliers, who will also play at Appalachian State and Charleston Southern.
Tickets for the game are $10 for adults and $5 for kids 17 and under. Season, mini-plan and single-game tickets for regular-season games are available via ECU ticket office at On-line Ticket Centeror by calling 1-800-DIAL-ECU.
