TULSA, Okla. - East Carolina continues league play Friday, facing first-place and No. 25 Tulsa at the Reynolds Center. First serve is set for 8 p.m. The Golden Hurricane owns the nation's longest winning streak, having captured 22-straight matches.
The Pirates (1-23, 0-12) dropped a pair of contests to Rice and Houston last weekend at home by 3-1 and 3-0 scores, respectively. ECU seeks its first victory since a 3-2 triumph over Binghamton at the Georgetown Classic.
Against the Owls, junior Jackie Varnum reached double figures in kills with 10, hitting .318 for the match. Classmate Amanda Lutzow was not far behind as she put down nine. Defensively, junior Nicole Jones racked up 20 digs while Lutzow collected 14. Additionally, Varnum tallied a career-best seven blocks.
Rice enjoyed advantages in kills (54-41), hitting (.189-.086) and digs (58-55), but the Pirates got the best of the blocking 13-12. Rice also put up four service aces as opposed to one for ECU.
In the Sunday match vs. Houston, freshman Andrea Queck recorded a career-high 11 digs to go along with 24 by Jones. Additionally, Kasey Kavanaugh nearly tallied the first double-double of her career with 24 assists and a season-best nine digs.
Offensively, Whitney Campbell racked up a team-best eight kills as well as one of ECU's two block assists.
Aided by 20 kills from Lucy Charuk, Houston enjoyed a 50-26 advantage while the Cougars also held the upper hand in hitting (.266-.067), service aces (4-1), digs (64-58) and total blocks (3.0-1.0).
Tulsa is hitting .291 (1278-394-3041) with 1,278 kills (15.40 k/s), 1,197 assists (14.42 a/s), 110 service aces (1.33 sa/s), 1,394 digs (16.80 dig/s) and 116.0 total blocks (1.40 blk/s). The Hurricane's opponents hit .170 (914-420-2913) with 914 kills (11.01 k/s), 855 assists (10.30 a/s), 70 service aces (0.84 sa/s), 1,180 digs (14.22 dig/s) and 146.5 total blocks (1.77 blk/s).
Tulsa is led on the outside by sophomore Tyler Henderson, who has 539 kills (6.49 kills per set), a .344 attack percentage, 127 digs, 42.0 total blocks and 578.5 points for the Hurricane. Sophomore Diana Silva has 206 kills (2.48 k/s) and 269 digs (3.24 dig/s). Junior Kelsey Hancock has 163 kills (2.04 k/s) and hits .237.
At middle blocker, senior Hannah Stout hits .357 with 191 kills and 41.0 blocks, while freshman Elizabeth Kale leads TU with 54.0 blocks. Sophomore libero Jessica Adams leads Tulsa with 392 digs (4.72 dig/s). Sophomore setter Jordan Clampitt has 1,115 assists (13.43 a/s) and 197 digs (2.37 dig/s).
After battling Tulsa, ECU continues its road swing with a matchup against SMU. The Pirates and Mustangs will tussle at 3 p.m. inside Moody Coliseum.
