The 1953 Pirate football team put together one of the most successful seasons in school history up to that point, but ended the campaign on a bitter note with a 12-0 loss to Morris-Harvey in the 1954 Elks Bowl.
East Carolina College won the North State Conference championship in 1953 with a perfect 6-0 conference record, but its lone regular-season loss to Tampa cost the Pirates a bid to the Tangerine Bowl in Florida.
Quarterback Dick Cherry and end Bobby Hodges received honorable mention Little All-America by the Associated Press, and Cherry, Hodges, and Paul Gay were named to the Greensboro Daily News all-state team.
The loss to Morris-Harvey left the Pirates with a final record of 8-2.
