Lady Pirate Tennis Splits Pair In Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The East Carolina women's tennis squad split a pair of non-conference matches Saturday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center, falling to host North Carolina 7-0 in the morning before defeating Gardner-Webb by a 5-2 score during the afternoon.

The Tar Heels currently ranked the second best women's squad nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), collected all doubles and singles decisions to earn a 7-0 victory over ECU. Freshman Abby Richmond provided the toughest competition before falling to UNC's Linzee Mabrey 7-5, 7-5 in the No. 6 singles flight.

Despite the morning set back the Pirates started strong sweeping all three doubles matches. ECU captured the doubles point after a commanding 8-0 win by Natalie Collins and Brooke Walter over Tavenner Black and Ronia Hutterli at the No.3 slot.

In singles play, Yilian Zhang outlasted Hutterli 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 5 slot while Collins, Petra Vogel and Sachs all retired the Bulldogs in two sets to clinch the team victory. Collins cruised past Rita Gouveia (6-2, 6-4) at No. 3, Vogel dismissed Kasey Ellis (6-1, 6-2) at No. 4 and Sachs posted a (7-5, 6-1) triumph over Black at No. 6.

Gardner-Webb's two tallies came at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matchups, with Erica White blanked Audrey LePottier (6-0, 6-0) in the No. 1 position and Ioana Oprea defeated Jessica Cook by a score of 6-1, 6-2.

East Carolina will return to action Tuesday when it travels to Buies Creek for a 2:00 p.m. match at Campbell.
