ECU Opens C-USA Championship Meet

HOUSTON --- East Carolina opened competition at the 2010 Conference USA Swimming & Diving Championship and Invitational Wednesday night at the CRWC Natatorium on the University of Houston campus. Only five events were contested on the first night of the four-day event.
ECU and Houston are tied for third place on the ladies side with 62 points apiece. Four-time defending champion SMU is in first place with 80 points followed by Rice with 68 points. Tulane (56) sits in fifth place followed by Marshall (52) in sixth.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Kylie Francis, Stephanie Harper, Natalia Favoreto and Jenna Stewart earned a fourth place finish with a time of 1:43.63, missing their NCAA `B' cut by less than a second.
Kelsey Brosi, Rachel Blue, Holly Berenotto and Michelle Gadowry teamed up to take third place in the 880-yard freestyle relay (7:26.74).
On the men's side, the Pirates are in fifth place with 46 points. First place SMU has a comfortable lead with 113 points, 23 points ahead of second place Cal State Bakersfield (90). Hawaii (88) is in third place followed by North Dakota (60) in fourth.
Freshman diver Tyler Dunsmore placed fifth on the one-meter springboard with a score of 262.25, missing fourth place by a mere four points and a medal by just 23 points.
Thiago Cavalcanti, Jonathan Bailey, Andrew Christian and Blake Briese earned a third place finish in the 800-yard freestyle with a time of 6:43.75.
The meet resumes at 10 a.m., Thursday with the preliminaries of the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley and the 50-yard freestyle. The women's 3-meter diving preliminaries will begin around 2 p.m. The finals for those events are slated to begin around 7 p.m.
