GREENVILLE, N.C. --- Justin Hurtt scored a career-high 34 points and made seven 3-point field goals to lead Tulsa past East Carolina, 85-73, inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Saturday.
Hurtt led a quartet of players in double figures for the Golden Hurricane (20-9, 9-5 Conference USA), who snapped a four-game losing streak and remained one-game back of Marshall for fourth place in the league standings. The top four teams in the final regular season standings get a first round bye in the conference tournament, which begins in Tulsa on March 10.
It was Tulsa's sixth consecutive victory over ECU (9-19, 3-11), who has lost two of three and six of its last eight.
Hurtt, who made 7-of-11 3-pointers and 11-of-16 from the field, scored 10 consecutive points to break open a close game midway through the second half. Following a made free throw, Hurtt drained three consecutive 3-pointers to give Tulsa a 60-47 lead with 11:04 to play. Tulsa built a 16-point lead and never led by less than 11 in the final nine minutes.
Jerome Jordan posted his ninth double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Joe Richard added 13 points and Ben Uzoh dropped in 10 points for Tulsa, who improved to 4-3 on the road in league play.
The spotlight didn't just belong exclusively to Hurtt Saturday as he shared it with ECU junior Brock Young who scored a career-high 30 points on 10-of-20 shooting from the floor and 9-of-9 at the free throw line.
Young scored 11 of the Pirates' final 18 points, tossing in 15 points in each half. He is the first ECU player to score 30 points since Sam Hinnant dropped 30 on Houston nearly a year ago.
Darrius Morrow was the only other Pirate to score in double figures as he finished with 15 points.
Tulsa led wire-to-wire and finished the game shooting 53.7 percent from the field, including 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from behind the arc, and recorded 20 assists on 29 field goals. East Carolina shot 46.6 percent for the game after making 17-of-32 field goals in the second half.
Both teams committed 13 turnovers, but it was Tulsa that was able to take better advantage of miscues and outscored ECU 20-9 off turnovers.
