HOUSTON --- The East Carolina women's swimming and diving team earned a second place finish at the 2010 Conference USA Swimming & Diving Championship and Invitational Saturday night at the CRWC Natatorium on the University of Houston campus, moving past Rice on the final day of competition.
SMU hoisted the championship trophy for a fifth-consecutive year by scoring 707 points in the three-day event. The Pirates finished with a team score of 611, while Rice (596) claimed third place. Houston (533.50) took fourth place with Tulane (277) and Marshall (188) earning fifth and sixth, respectively.
In the invitational scoring, North Dakota had 340.50 points, followed by Cal State Bakersfield (277) and Northern Colorado (200).
Junior Jenna Stewart took second-place in the 100-yard freestyle with an NCAA `B' cut time of 49.92. Sophomore Kelsey Brosi achieved all-conference status in the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.92) with a third-place finish. Stewart and Brosi teamed with Rachel Blue and Natalia Favorteo to take second-place in the 400-yard freestyle relay, posting an NCAA `B' cut time (3:23.10).
The Pirates finished fourth in the C-USA Men's Invitational. SMU won the invitational with 871 points, followed by Hawaii with 833 points. Cal State Bakersfield earned third-place honors with 534 points followed by East Carolina (516) and North Dakota (304) took fourth and fifth, respectively.
Junior Thiago Cavalcanti posted an NCAA `B' cut time (15:31.78) in the 1650-yard freestyle and earned a second-place finish as did sophomore Travis Stauder in the 200-yard breaststroke (1:59.63).
