ATLANTA, Ga. --- Members of the East Carolina diving teams participated in the 2010 NCAA Zone B Diving Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center over the weekend. Although, the Pirates didn't advance any diver of the national championships, coach Mark Lenzi was very pleased with the overall performance of his young divers.
"The very best divers in the country were at our zone meet," Lenzi said. "Some of their competitors will be on the next Olympic team. Tyler Dunsmore and Kirstie Russell did very well in their freshman year, which is a great sign of things to come for them. Meghan Coyne improved dramatically from her freshman year. I am very pleased and the future looks bright for the Pirate divers!"
At the NCAA Zone Championships on Friday, Coyne placed 17th overall with a score of 472.95 during the one-meter springboard finals competition. Russell placed 32nd during the preliminaries with a score of 168.10. Dunsmore finished 33rd in the men's three-meter springboard preliminaries with a score of 231.40.
Russell (211.65) and Coyne (178.10) placed 28th and 30th during the preliminary competition on the three-meter springboard Saturday, but didn't reach the finals. Dunsmore (230.45) posted a similar result on the one-meter springboard with a 30th-place finish.
