
Women's Tennis Knocks Off UNC Charlotte, 6-1

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The ECU women's tennis team secured the doubles point and only dropped one singles match en route to a 6-1 victory over UNC Charlotte Saturday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex.
The Pirates moved their 2009 record to 12-6 while Charlotte dropped to 4-12.
All three doubles matches ended in an 8-4 decision with ECU taking two of the three as the No. 1 tandem, Jessica Cook and Audrey LePottier won over Ana Spivakovsky and Alexandra Zinn while Petra Vogel and Yilian Zhang defeated Anna Ekelund and Gabi Vergara to put the team on top. Kimber Redfern and Andrea Rivera handed Natalie Collins and Tamara Sachs the loss at No. 3 to prevent the sweep.
East Carolina took five of six singles matches four of which came in straight sets. LePottier started singles with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Vergara at No.4, in the No. 3 position Collins handled Redfern 6-2, 6-1 before Zhang took the win with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Candace Cunningham at No. 5.
At No. 2, Vogel bested Rivera 6-2, 6-3 and Cook outlasted Zinn 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 to complete ECU's singles streak.
After dropping the first set 2-6, Iveta Guneva (No. 6) dismissed Abby Richmond in the next two sets 6-1, 1-0 to earn the lone point for the 49ers and end the match.
East Carolina will start a two match road swing on Thursday when it faces the College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C. at 1:30 p.m. and Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C. at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.
