SAN JUAN, P.R. - East Carolina's spring break schedule hit a snag as Boston swept doubles play and won five of six singles matches to hand the Pirates a 6-1 loss in the opening match of a three match stay in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The Lady Pirates, who suffered their second-straight loss, fell to 8-5 on the year while the Terriers improved to 4-7.
Boston captured the doubles point after earning 8-3 victories in the top two doubles slots by Vivien Laszloffy and Stefanie Nunic over Jessica Cooka and Audrey LePottier at the No.1 position and Monika Mical and Francine Whu over Petra Vogel and Yilian Zhang in the No. 2 flight. To complete the sweep Jessi Linero and Petra Santini needed four tiebreaker points to take the No. 3 matchup from Natalie Collins and Tamara Sachs 8-7.
Boston would take five of six singles matches, Nunic started the Terriers off with a win at No. 1 over Cook 6-1, 6-2, while Linero (BU) defeated Sachs 6-2, 7-6 and Francine Whu earned the match point at No. 2 with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 victory over LePittier. Collins fell to Laszloffy 6-1, 6-7, 10-8 at No. 3 and Mical posted a 2-6, 6-4, 11-9 win over Zhang at No. 5 to record the last two points for Boston.
In the battle of the Petra's in the No. 4 singles match, ECU's Vogel outlasted Santini 3-6, 7-5, 10-5 to record the Pirates only point of the match.
East Carolina will close out its San Juan, Puerto Rico trip tomorrow with a doubleheader against Bryant and James Madison Universities.
