
Pirates Sweep Day Two Doubleheader

SAN JUAN, P.R. - East Carolina made a strong showing in day two of the Spring Break Invitational with doubles sweeps and a combined 10-12 singles matches in a 5-2 win over James Madison and a 7-0 win over Bryant University in women’s tennis action Tuesday.
The pair of triumphs improved the Lady Pirates' spring dual match record to 10-5 while the Dukes and Bulldogs dropped to 1-5 and 2-6, respectively.
In the opener against James Madison, ECU combined to record 8-5 scores in all three doubles matches. At No. 1 Jessica Cook and Audrey LePottier defeated Katherine Bulling and Kinsey Pate while Petra Vogel and Yilian Zhang handled Megan Douglass and Rebecca Erickson at No. 2 to help the Lady Pirates tally the doubles point. In the No. 3 match up Natalie Collins and Tamara Sachs took care of Michelle Nguyen and Kristin Nimitz to complete doubles play.
Up 1-0 East Carolina took four singles matches led by Vogel and Zhang who each posted straight set victories at the No. 4 and No.6 position. Cook won the fist set and dropped the second before taking the No. 1 flight over Bulling 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Collins also needed an extra set but would prevail over Erickson 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 at No. 3. to give ECU the 5-2 win.
Kinsey Pate bested LePottier 6-2, 7-5 and Kristin Nimitz defeated Sachs with the same score to earn the Dukes two points.
Against Bryant in the nightcap, the Lady Pirates again rolled to a 24-12 doubles record before following with a 72-12 singles mark. Collins and Sachs logged an 8-3 tandem triumph over the Bulldogs' Irma Rodriguez Lockwood and Dana Tausek to spark ECU's first point. In singles play, the Pirates took all six matches in straight sets highlighted by Vogel’s 6-0, 6-0 win over Rodriguez Lockwood at No. 4 while Cook (No. 1) and Collins (No. 3) each captured 6-2, 6-2 victories. East Carolina would take the No.2 match as LePottier defeated Valeria Couto Cuervo 6-1, 6-0, while Zhang rolled past Chelsea Downing 6-0, 6-1 and Sachs handled Katharine McCabe 6-2, 6-0 to complete the sweep.
The Lady Pirates will host Drake University next Tuesday, March 16 for a 2:30 p.m. match up.
