GREENVILLE, N.C. - Sophomore Zach Wright belted his team-leading 10th home run, while Kyle Roller and Corey Thompson each had two hits to lift No. 26 East Carolina to a 6-3 win over in-state foe Campbell Tuesday night at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. With the win the Pirates improve to 21-12 overall while the Camels fall to 17-17.
Brad Mincey (2-1) recorded his first win as a starter since Feb. 28 going 5 2/3 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts. The Pirates bullpen was outstanding surrendering just two hits over the final 3 1/3 frames with three punch outs.
Seth Simmons worked a perfect ninth to record his seventh save of the season and 18th of his career moving him into second-place on the school's all-time saves list. Shawn Armstrong (1.1 IP, 1 H, 2 Ks) spelled Mincey in the sixth striking out Chris Bangi with a man on second to end the frame. Mike Wright tossed an inning of shutout relief giving up a hit and striking out one.
Campbell starter Jeff Rydman suffered the loss falling to 2-1 after allowing two runs (both earned) on four hits in two innings. The Camels used four pitchers (Ben Brown, Parker Fleming, Joe Wagstaff and David Rivera) which allowed four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
The Pirates wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard when Wright smacked a two-run homer to right field in the first frame for a 2-0 lead. With two outs, Roller roped his 13th double of the season down the right field line and trotted home on Wright's blast.
Campbell pushed across a run in the top half of the third cutting the lead to one, 2-1. Bangi singled up the middle to start the frame then took second when Ellis Lowe grounded out on a sac bunt. Alan Denman followed with a walk to put runners on first and second before Alex Aycoth reached on a fielder's choice when Thompson failed to turn a double-play dropping the ball on the exchange and scoring Bangi.
In the bottom half of the third, Roller pushed the Pirate lead back to two, 3-1, when he scored on a failed pickoff attempt by Brown. The Rockingham, N.C. native, doubled for the second time in the contest with a one-out shot to right center then took third on a passed ball before scoring for the second time on the night.
Thompson extended the Pirates lead to 4-1 with a RBI single to right field in the fourth. Cam Freeman doubled down the left field line to start the stanza then took third on Philip Clark's ground out. Chris Gosik walked for the second time putting runners on the corners before Thompson laced a single to right scoring Freeman for the game-winning run.
Kevin Nelson drew the Camels within one, 4-3, in the sixth on a double down the left field line that scored Josh Holskey and D.J. Johnson. Holskey singled through the right side moved to second on D.J. Johnson's single to left and landed on third when Blake Boyce was plunked by a Mincey pitch loading the bases for Nelson.
Thompson's bases loaded single in the sixth extended ECU's lead to 6-3. Devin Harris and Freeman reached on back-to-back fielding errors and Clark loaded the bases for pinch hitter Austin Homan when he singled on a bunt back to the pitcher's mound. After Harris was forced out at the plate during Homan's at-bat and Trent Whitehead struck out, Thompson lifted a 1-0 count to right field scoring both Freeman and Clark.
The Pirates will be back in action this weekend when they resume their Conference USA play at home against UAB.
