
ECU Hands Out Season Awards

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina University men's and women's swimming and diving team recently handed out their 2009-10 team awards during their annual end-of-the-year banquet.
Junior Thiago Cavalcanti and senior Rachel Blue were recognized as ECU's Most Outstanding Swimmers, and sophomore Meghan Coyne was the recipient of the Most Outstanding Diver Award. The award goes to the athlete who exhibits leadership, hard work, and outstanding performance for an entire season.
Cavalcanti set varsity records in the 1000 and 1650-yard freestyle during the Conference USA Championship meet and registered an NCAA `B' cut time in the 500-yard freestyle at the Gamecock Invitational. He posted the team's fastest time in four events. Likewise, Blue registered an NCAA `B' cut time in the 200-yard freestyle and posted the team's fastest times in a pair of freestyle events.
Coyne was named Conference USA Diver-of-the-Week five times during the season and qualified for the NCAA Zone Regional Championships.
The Most Improved awards went to junior swimmer Andrew Stoker and sophomore Kelsey Brosi along with diver Kirstie Russell, who qualified for the NCAA Zone Regional as a freshman. Stoker recorded the Pirates' fastest times of the season in the 100 and 200-yard butterfly at the season-ending C-USA Championship meet. Brosi registered the team's best time in the 200-yard backstroke and was among the top three in four other events.
The Rookie-of-the-Year awards went to swimmers Chris Borysewicz and Kayla Ford, while Tyler Dunsmore was the recipient of the diving honor. Borysewicz ranked among the squad's top four fastest swimmers in four events, while Ford posted the ladies' top time in the 100-yard backstroke.
Sophomores Travis Stauder and Kristen Giese were the recipients of the ECU Championship Coaches Award that is give to the individual on each squad that exceeded expectations and had an outstanding C-USA Championship meet. Stauder set varsity records and posted NCAA `B' cut times in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke to earn all-conference honors in both events. Giese posted her top times of the season in three events during the championship event.
