GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina baseball team claimed its third Conference USA series over the weekend taking two of three games from Marshall at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. The junior pitching duo of Zach Woods (8.0 IP, 8 Ks) and Seth Maness (CG, 9.0 IP, 8 Ks) picked up wins over the weekend and helped the Pirates move into a tie for fourth place with Southern Miss, who ECU will play this weekend in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Corey Thompson, 3B, Sophomore
Thompson batted a team-best .529 (9-for-17) over ECU's 3-1 week, which included hitting for the cycle in the series opener against Marshall ... Had two home runs, six RBI, scored seven runs, collected 18 total bases and slugged 1.059 - all leading the team ... Recorded a pair of four-hit games and multi-RBI games ... Stroked a RBI single at in-state rival UNC Wilmington ... Drove in three RBI and hit for the cycle in game one of the Marshall series going 4-for-5 on the night ... Roped a triple down the right field line in the third inning after striking out in his first at-bat of the night ... Followed with a solo home run in the fifth on an 11-pitch at-bat that broke a two-all tie and gave the Pirates the lead, which they would never relinquish ... In the seventh, he singled to right center and finished his then second career four-hit performance with a double to right center recording the first cycle of his career ... Scored a run in the series clinching game two against the Herd ... In the series finale posted third career four-hit game going 4-for-5 from the dish ... Smacked sixth home run of the year in the seventh inning, a two-run shot down the right field line ... Also recorded three singles ... Drove in a pair of runs and scored one run ... Raised his batting average 19 points to a team-best .385 over the weekend ... Also leads the squad in hits (67), RBI (46), runs (49) and total bases (104).
Pirate Pitcher-of-the-Week
Seth Maness, RHP, Junior
Maness tossed his second career complete game over the weekend allowing three runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts ... He improved to 8-2 on the season and 4-0 in league play in five starts this season ... With the win, the right-hander from Pinehurst, N.C. improved to 16-2 all-time against C-USA members ... He moved into a tie for sixth place on C-USA's all-time win list while also moving into ninth place on ECU's career wins list with 26 victories ... Has won his last eight decisions after starting the season 0-2 ... He retired the side three times including nine of his first 11 batters ... Has six quality starts (6.0 IP - plus, 3 ER or less) in 11 starts ... In all, he faced 37 batters getting Marshall to ground out 12 times and fly out seven to go along with his eight punch outs ... Fanned 69 batters, second on the team, while walking just 13 in 74.0 IP this season.
PIRATE NOTES:
Despite hitting .333 (3-for-9) on the week, Roller had a stellar week at the plate drawing eight walks and was hit twice ... He scored five runs on the week and smacked his 10th homer of the season and 49th of his career in game two against Marshall over the weekend ... With his eight free passes, Roller has 49 walks on the season and is four away from setting a new single-season school record (52) ... Roller has received a free pass in 30 of 44 games played this season ...Collected his lone multi-hit game on Saturday against Marshall (2-for-4) ... Also had a pair of multi-run games ... Currently ranks second on the team in average (.352), home runs (10), runs (43) and total bases (97), while ranking third in RBI (42) and leading the team with a .669 slugging and .550 on-base percentage.
Zach Wright recorded his second career multi-HR game of the season and career when he blasted a pair of three-run shots against Marshall on Saturday ... The sophomore catcher drove in a career-best six RBI while also drawing a pair of walks ... Batted .300 (3-for-10) on the week with two walks and two runs scored ... Currently leads the team with 13 round-trippers and is tied with Thompson with 46 RBI.
Cam Freeman (third) and Trent Whitehead (second) also hit home runs on the week to highlight ECU's seven home run week ... Freeman was homerless for 108 at-bats before he his solo shot to right center against Marshall on Saturday to lead off the fourth frame ... Whitehead hit a solo shot at UNC Wilmington leading fifth starting a five-run frame.
Zach Woods improved to 6-2 on the season after picking up his second conference win in the series opener against Marshall ... The right-hander scattered five hits over eight frames which included three over the final six innings ... He allowed back-to-back home runs in the second followed by a walk before fanning two of the next three hitters to get out of the frame ... In all he allowed three runs, two earned with a pair of walks, eight strikeouts and retired the side in order five times ... Woods currently leads the Pirate pitching staff with 77 strikeouts in 64.2 innings, while walking just 15.
Freshman Jake Harris allowed one run on the week in 4.2 innings of work with four strikeouts ... Against UNC Wilmington, he picked up his second win after holding the Seahawks hitless in 3.2 innings ... He retired 11 of 12 batters faced issuing a leadoff walk to Cody Stanley before being lifted for Seth Simmons in the ninth frame ... Harris finished the night with three punch outs and was charged with one run that came across on a double by Hunter Ridge off of Simmons with two outs in the bottom of the ninth ... Allowed a hit and walk in an inning of relief against Marshall on Sunday ... Opposing hitters batted .071 against him on the week.
Head Coach Billy Godwin recorded his 188th win as the Pirates skipper in ECU's series win over Marshall and is third on the school's all-time wins list ... He is 25 wins away from passing ECU Hall of Famer, Keith LeClair (212-96-1), for second place all-time.
