GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina senior catcher Jared Avchen has been named to the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District First-Team according to an announcement Thursday evening by CoSIDA. Avchen has a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in business and will be listed on the national ballot for CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine All-America honors.
Avchen is a two-time Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Medal and C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll selection and has been named to the ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll four consecutive semesters.
On the field, the two-time Johnny Bench Award Watch List Candidate, has started 25 of 32 games played where he is batting .275 (28-for-102) with a career-best four home runs and 26 RBI.
In his two-year career with the Pirates, the Palm Bay, Fla. native has started 81 career games and boasts a .309 average (86-for-278) with six home runs and 55 RBI, nine of which have been game-winning.
Avchen and the Pirates (27-18, 8-7) return to action Friday night when they start a three-game C-USA road series in Hattiesburg, Miss. against Southern Miss (26-17, 8-7) with a first pitch scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (EDT).
